We wanted to show some of what was involved in building our home/resort and what the property looked like pre-development. We have since completed all aspects and have been open full-time since March 2022. Please stop by and say hello if you are ever in our area or visiting the Fantasy World theme park, which is only about 200 meters from our location.
We learned a hard lesson about having a swimming pool built by a contractor who claimed to be an expert at building swimming pools. So many corners cut!
This pool is built to last, and the construction was upgraded considerably.
After renting a backhoe for several days and knowing all the work ahead, I realized this was going to get expensive. I decided I might as well purchase a used one and learn to operate it myself. This is my attempt at operating it with only about 3 hours of experience. Not too bad?
MaryAnne is very hands-on during the building process. While we lived in the USA, MaryAnne was in charge of running the tile removal crews for my company. She is a very hard worker and has an excellent work ethic. I'm proud to have her as my wife and partner in business here building and running our resort.
One day while we were working on our resort, my daughter Mariel decided to try mixing concrete for one of our projects. At the 40 second mark, you can see the Fantasy World theme park in the background; only about 200 meters away from us.
We decided to go a little crazy with brick pavers by creating concrete rectangles 8" wide by 12" thick, reinforced with steel rebar. This project took several months to complete but definitely worth it in the end!
After experiencing one too many "brown-outs," we opted to purchase a backup generator. The funny thing is that the brownouts we experienced afterward weren't too long once we had the generator. Anyhow, we figure that eventually, there will be many hours or even a day or two here and there without power that will make us glad we have it!
I lucked out and found a fantastic Deep Well company that left me with a slick, beautiful, useless, and non-functioning well that I couldn't be prouder of. After spending $2,500,000, this well really gives me some bragging rights! I took advantage of them since the results were easily worth $3,500,000. Check out the video and see for yourself! Thanks again, Eric Morante Water Piping Installation Services, for the fine job at creating my useless deep well! You outdid yourself, and the results blow me away.
I still remember how cool it was to see the water spilling down the wall and coming out of the return lines. Unfortunately, our excitement was short-lived because it turned out that the pool leaked water horribly. Once the pool was filled by morning, it lost about 10,000 liters of water. It also turns out the contractor (A & R Swimming Pool & Landscaping) we hired took many shortcuts, which left the pool prone to leaks. For those considering building a pool in the Philippines, please be VERY CAREFUL about who you hire.
This was earlier in the day, with about four or five water truckloads (about 6,000 liters per truckload) pumped into the pool. Our deep well was useless and non-functioning then (please see the video about that), so we had to spend a small fortune with another vendor purchasing and delivering water. I felt so happy to see my daughter smiling! Having family sure makes your life complete.
This pool had to be torn apart to make repairs. It basically had to be rebuilt from scratch. What an expensive learning process! The original contractor (A & R Swimming Pool & Landscaping) deceived us into thinking they were experts.
This video was taken shortly after I fired the original pool contractor (A & R Swimming Pool & Landscaping) for building such a joke of a pool. It ended up taking about 2 months to find another pool contractor.
I can't begin to tell you how glad we were to finally find another pool contractor to rebuild our defective pool. While this project had its share of issues, the completed pool did not leak. My personal laborers did most of the finished concrete work, most of the glass tile installation, and all the grouting. As it turned out, the new contractors' workmen did not possess a high degree of attention to detail. They had never prepared concrete for glass mosaic tiles nor ever installed mosaic glass tiles.
Orly (in a yellow shirt) is applying concrete to a wall on our new pool. We basically use clear fishing lines as guides to apply the concrete. This work is very tedious and requires excellent attention to detail. The work looks rough at this moment, but several weeks from now, the concrete walls will be looking nice!
This overlooks the property previously owned by MaryAnne's Uncle Ben. There is a lot of prior construction, footings, and water storage to remove.
Uncle Ben's property has been substantially flattened to make room for future renovations.
Instead of going with the entire courtyard using strictly brick pavers, we opted to create sections using concrete beams. It took nearly 4 months to complete.
Making slow progress building the separate concrete beams to contain the brick pavers. Each concrete beam is 12" thick (30.5 centimeters) and 8" wide (20.3 centimeters). They each contain 2 pieces of number 16 rebar. The concrete was poured using Sahara waterproofing material.
This was at the very start of the pool project. Here, some of the workers are spreading dirt from the higher spots.
A little more progress on the initial retaining walls for the pool.
The is the original pool company installing the floor rebar beams. So many corners are being cut in this picture. There should have been vertical beams in each corner, along with vertical beams adjoining the horizontal floor beams. Lastly, there should have been a continous horizontal beam along the top of the walls. This pool was doomed from the start.
The rebar is installed and the floor of the concrete is poured. We found out much later that this pool company incorrectly built our pool resulting in the pool leaking.
The original pool company has been fired and a new company hired. The old tiles have been removed and the new, stronger rebar beams are being put into place.
This is the second pool company we hired to rebuild the defective pool made by the original pool company. Please note the substantial vertical and horizontal rebar beams that weren't there from the prior installation.
